With habitat and human/animal factors accelerating extinctions at such unprecedented rates, there are times when a species suffers such a sudden decline that immediate intervention from well-prepared facilities with a nimble turnaround is needed. The model is characterized by emergency/crisis, keystone species with an important role in ecosystems, and significant and urgent space capacity needs. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is a key partner for these efforts. Species that may fit this model are the red wolf, whooping crane, southern black rhinoceros, and saiga antelope. To support these efforts, C2S2 will build a recovery fund in inevitable expectation of other species crises.
